Digicel Guyana announced today that it has paid the fees for children at the Sophia Night School sitting the upcoming CSEC examinations. Over 30 students will benefit from this partnership between Digicel and the Sophia Night School. The goal of the CSEC programme is to provide young adults who were unable to graduate from high school with the opportunity of completing their CSEC examinations. In addition, three laptops were donated to be used by students without a device to attend virtual classes.

The Sophia Community Development Association’s Coordinator, Orin Nelson, and Programme Director, Leroy Adolphus, accepted the donation at Digicel’s headquarters in Kingston. Simone Pierre, the Chief Commerical Officer of Digicel, speaking with some of the students, noted, “Education opens the door to numerous opportunities.”She urged them to study hard since these exams could be the stepping stone to attending the University of Guyana.

The Sophia Community Development Association (SOCDA) is a community-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that provides programmes and activities aimed at promoting youth empowerment and education as vehicles or mechanisms for overcoming or reducing the prevalence of crime and violence in the Sophia community and its surrounding environs. Digicel representatives said they were pleased to be part of this joint effort with SOCDA in making over 30 students’ wishes of completing their CSEC examinations a reality.
