Selwin Dawson and Kevin Persaud, who were jointly charged with the 2017 murder of clothes vendor Purcell Moore, were today handed a life imprisonment sentence by Sandil Kissoon in the High Court.

Initially indicted for murder, the duo opted to plead guilty to the lesser offense of manslaughter, admitting that on December 20, 2017, they unlawfully killed Moore during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

They will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum term of 15 years.

Dawson was represented by Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson, while Attorney-at-law Damien DaSilva represented Persaud. State Counsel Lisa Cave and State Counsel Mohamed Ali represented the prosecution.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Kissoon stressed the importance of citizens being able to carry out their business without being robbed. As a result, the Judge noted that the sentence must not only “fit this bastardly act” but also serve as a deterrent.

Moore, 40, had just returned to his homeland from French Guiana to celebrate the Christmas holidays with his family when he was shot and robbed of his gold chain and other jewelry by three men. He received two gunshot wounds- one to the head and another to the chest.

He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
