There are 29 members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) before the courts for misdemeanors including rape, robbery, and corruption, says Police Commissioner (acting), Nigel Hoppie. He made this revelation and others during his remarks at the force’s presentation of awards and incentives today.

“Yes, we have had deviants who have breached the Police Force’s Code of Conduct and Standing Orders. We are not going to be naïve and bury our heads in the sand. We have members of the Law Enforcement community who are faced with allegations of rape, robbery, manslaughter, assault and corruption, neglect of duty but who were dealt with condignly, having either been placed before the courts or on disciplinary charges, accordingly. Presently, there are 29 ranks before the courts on various charges,” the Top Cop said.

Hoppie noted that “despite those few, and amidst oftentimes unmerited criticisms”, “the Guyana Police Force continues to perform its role and responsibilities credibly; coping and grasping with challenges and opportunities accordingly and has been able to maintain a safe and secure environment within the country”.

He added that Guyana is currently experiencing a decrease in serious crimes, with robberies and murder on the decline.

At the Presentation of Awards and Incentives, members of the Force, who have performed beyond the normal call of duty and have given yeoman service to the community in their efforts to achieve the Force’s mandate and fulfilling its Motto of Service and Protection, are given tangible recognition by the force.

Not only are police ranks eligible for such Awards, but also Community Policing Groups, members of Community Policing Groups, and civilians who have made significant contributions in support of the Police Force.

The force will be recognizing a total of 3,258 ranks and 28 Community Policing Groups. A total of $17,766,000 will be paid out as incentives along with other prizes.

Since the commencement of the Awards Ceremony in 1990, the Police Force has paid out a total of $448,865,000 as cash incentives to deserving police ranks.
