Region Nine’s Regional Executive Officer (REO), Karl Singh landed in hot water two days ago when reports coming out of the district surfaced that he had allegedly shot Gladys Emmanuel, a pharmacist of St. Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi.

Police in a release yesterday said that the shooting was ‘allegedly accidental’, adding that Singh was released on bail and is to return to the police at Lethem today.

Investigators were initially treating the matter, which occurred on the Lethem Main Access Road around 01;00hrs as an attempted murder.

Emmanuel is listed as stable after undergoing surgery.

Meanwhile, Geeta Chandan-Edmond, Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, has called for a thorough investigation “free from political interference’.

” The investigation must be concluded speedily so that all wrongdoing must be dealt with condignly to the fullest extent of the law,” she said, while adding that Singh be suspended from all official duties as REO forthwith and for the duration of the investigation.

She also called on women’s organizations, indigenous organizations and “all right-thinking Guyanese to stand up and speak out against the unwarranted violence meted out against our indigenous sister Gladys Emmanuel and on the relentless attacks on our womenfolk”.
