A police officer and a suspected robber were both shot today during a scuffle at Leopold Street, Georgetown around 10:35hrs this morning.

Guyana Standard understands that at the time of the incident, a party of policemen was responding to an alleged Robbery Under Arms committed on a 68-year-old man, when in the process of arresting the suspects, a scuffle ensued between the suspects and the rank.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a statement today said that one of the suspects held on to the policeman’s firearm in an attempt to disarm him. The firearm dislodged and the policeman was shot in his left thigh and one of the suspects also received a gunshot wound to his left thigh.

Both injured persons were escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and are presently receiving medical attention, while the other suspect is in custody.

Investigations are in progress.
