A young construction worker was denied bail after a Magistrate heard that he allegedly robbed five persons of gold jewellery and foreign cash.

24-year-old Jason Cadogan, of 48 Seaford Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts today when he was remanded for five armed robbery charges.

It is alleged that on August 18, 2021, at Da Silva Street, Kitty, while being armed with a gun he robbed five persons; Bibi Bacchus, Ronald Junior, Rajpattie Rangolee, Surajpaul Caleta, and Sachin Khan of a quantity of jewelry and cash amounting to $2,803,000. He denied the charges.

The court prosecutor said that on the date mentioned, the man and another who were both carting guns entered the jewellery shop at the location and demanded that Persons hand over the articles that are mentioned in the charges.

The police said that gold rings, gold chains, bangles, gold jingles, earrings, a shoulder bag, and a cellphone, as well as US$2,000 and TT$300 were taken.

The court heard that after relieving the virtual complainants of the articles, the men escaped. A report of the matter was then made to the Kitty Police Station. The man was later arrested on October 25, following a raid by police at his home. He was wanted for another matter.

Dexter John, the owner of the jewellery shop identified the man to the police while he was in custody at the Alberttown Police Station, the Prosecutor told the court.

However his attorney, Latchmie Rahamat said that her client was not placed on a proper identification parade. She said that the man is being wrongfully accused. She added that the man was kept in custody for more than 72 hours after being arrested on Tuesday last. He was brought to court on Monday but the matter was not filed, hence he was released on his recognizance.

In her application for bail, she said that her client will attend court and has a family who is going to keep him in line. She further noted that her client has never had brushes with the law and he is a good member of society.

He was remanded until November 17.

Meanwhile his accomplice, Jamal Cromwell is also facing an armed robbery charge concerning the robbery. The man was not required to plead to the charge which alleges that on the said date and at the same location, while armed with a gun, he robbed Rangolee of a shoulder bag, two anklets, two gold chains, five rings, a gold jingle, a gold bangle, a pair of earrings and Trinidad and Tobago and United States of America currency amounting to $1,433,000. He was also remanded until November 17.
