Sixteen-year-old Shereeda Persaud, of Bath, West Coast Berbice (WCB), who lost her life in an accident at Mahaica yesterday, was the Minister of Home Affairs during the 2021 Youth Parliament. This was revealed today by House Speaker, Manzoor Nadir when he extended condolences to the teen’s family and the loved ones of her 21-year-old boyfriend, Christopher Bhagwandat, who also perished during the smash up.

Nadir said that ironically, Persaud’s presentation at the Youth Parliament was on road safety.

Persaud and Bhagwandat were pronounced dead on arrival after the vehicle, which was being driven by the 21-year-old crashed into a canter on the Mahaica bridge.

According to the police, the young man was driving motorcar PNN 8852 when he was stopped by traffic ranks. Reports indicate that Bhagwandat was asked to pull over but disobeyed. A chase ensued which resulted in the crash. Several police ranks and civilians were injured.
