Cops in Regional Division One are probing an accident that occurred last night at around 11:00hrs on the Eyelash Main Access Road, North West District (NWD), that has left one dead and another seriously injured.

The accident involved an all terrain vehicle (ATV) that was being driven at the time by Rovin James, 36, of Charity Extension Scheme, Essequibo, Pomeroon, and motor lorry GZZ 4598, driven by Ryan Vanlange, 38, of South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to the report, the ATV was proceeding north along Eye Lash Main Access Road, NWD, with two pillion riders, 45-year-old Nigel Knights of Cummings Street, Georgetown, who was seated on the left side carrier; and 39-year-old Leslie Norton of Highma Top Backdam, NWD, who was seated on the right side behind the driver.

The ATV was descending a hill at a fast rate of speed when the driver suddenly lost control, causing the left side rear portion of the ATV, where Knights was seated, to collide into the left side of motor lorry GZZ 4598’s front portion – which was descending a hill and proceeding south in the direction of the mentioned road.

Due to the collision, the occupants of the ATV fell in different directions on the road surface, causing both pillion riders to receive injuries about their heads and bodies.

After falling, Knights became unconscious while Leslie Norton was semi-conscious. They were both picked up by public-spirited citizens, placed into motor pick-up, GNN 8068, and escorted by Constable Rogers to the Port Kaituma District Hospital.

Knights was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Roger while Norton was treated and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention via private aircraft.

Knights’ body is at the Port Kaituma District Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.

The ATV driver is detained at the Matthews Ridge Police Station.
