Police say that seven-year-old Jayden Cheeffoon is in a critical condition after he was knocked down by a car yesterday morning. The accident occurred on the Lovely Lass Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

According to the report, about 11:15hrs yesterday, motorcar HC 9812 was being driven by 50-year-old Joseph Warde of Lot 10 Manchester Village Corentyne Berbice proceeding west along the southern side of the public road about 75 K.M.P.H. The driver alleged that the child, who resides in the said village, suddenly ran north across the road from behind a parked car and into his path.

Warde told police that he applied brakes, but the front portion of his motorcar collided with the child. As a result of the collision, the child fell onto the road surface and received injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor, who treated and referred him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

The lad was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he is now a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), suffering from head injuries and a fractured shoulder.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver found no alcohol in his breath, however, a notice of intended prosecution has been served and he remains in custody assisting with further investigations.
