Police yesterday found a haversack containing close to nine pounds of marijuana in proximity to a Region Seven checkpoint.

While performing duties at the 70 KM Checkpoint, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) yesterday, cops stopped a 29-year-old miner who was riding a motorcycle, CH 6391, around 15:20hrs for a routine check but nothing illegal was found on his person.

However, based on suspicion, the ranks went to a checkpoint diversion track, where they found a motorcycle tyre print that led to the discovery of a black haversack.

A search was carried out on the said haversack and a quantity of cannabis leaves, seeds and stem suspected to be cannabis were discovered. It was taken back to the checkpoint where it was weighed and amounted to 3 kilograms, 990 grams.

The suspect was questioned about the haversack and its contents, but he has so far denied knowledge of the same.

Both he and the narcotics are being escorted to Bartica Police Station for further investigation.
