An injured gunman managed to evade capture when an angry crowd of villagers attacked cops at Albouystown, Georgetown last night.

The ranks were in the village investigating the GTT Giftland Mall robbery when they received information of a shooting incident in the area.

The ranks on Cooper Street observed three males walking in their direction and upon seeing the cops, one of the suspects pulled out a gun from the waist of his pants and discharged a round in the direction of the ranks.

The cops took cover and returned fire, hitting the suspect in his left thigh.

After he fell to the ground, the ranks managed to retrieve the pistol with two matching rounds of ammunition.

However, as they attempted to escort the injured suspect to seek medical attention, they were attacked by persons in the neighbourhood who began hurling bricks and bottles. The suspect escaped during the commotion.

Checks were made at all of the hospitals around Georgetown and based on information received, the injured suspect went to a city hospital but left before being treated.

Further investigations are in progress.
