The mother of a newborn that was abandoned near a canal in Recess Mahaicony has been found. This was confirmed today by a source close to the investigation. The mother, now revealed to be a minor, was located after the investigation team received an anonymous tip.

According to the source, the teen who also resides in the same area where the baby was found, was immediately taken to Georgetown where she is said to be receiving counseling from agents at the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA).

The teen was also reunited with her baby today. Reports are that the infant, assumed to be a few days old, was rescued by farmers in the district yesterday.

The source also said that the child was found with its umbilical cord and placenta still intact. The source said investigators suspect that the mother might have given birth to the child in the vicinity of where he was abandoned.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement today explained that the infant was examined by a team of doctors. The force said the child, after examination, appears to be in good health and remains in the care of the Mahaicony Public Hospital.

The newborn was discovered on Monday afternoon by a group of farmers in a gift bag stashed between a clump of bushes.

One of the farmers told detectives that he was alerted by the sounds of crying from a section of a highly vegetative area near the canal. He lamented that when he saw the infant, he quickly fell into an emotional state and thereafter alerted the other farmers.
