The construction of 48 homes is now underway in New Culvert City Housing Scheme and Tabatinga Housing Scheme, Region Nine, as part of the Lethem Housing Support Programme. The initiative, launched by the government, aims to promote sustainable housing development in hinterland communities and address the rising demand for move-in-ready homes.

Each housing unit spans around 550 square feet and comprises two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and sanitary facilities. The Lethem Housing Support Programme is a significant commitment from President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, with a total value of $600M. Under this initiative, the government will contribute $1M each to 600 low-income homeowners to mitigate the cost of their home construction.

The remaining $2M will be financed by the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), the New Building Society (NBS), and Republic Bank Limited (RBL) at a 3.5% interest rate. The financial institutions have waived the requirement for collateral, which means allottees will repay around $14,000 per month.

To support the local economy, construction materials such as bricks and timber for building the homes are being sourced from nearby communities, including St. Ignatius, Shulinab, Kwatamang, Shea, and Surama.

The Lethem Housing Support Programme is hailed as a vital initiative that promotes sustainable housing development in hinterland communities, providing residents with decent and affordable homes while supporting the local economy. (Modified from the Department of Public Information)
