A 38-year-old lorry driver has been charged with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal accident that occurred on March 6, 2023, on the Greenwich Park Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.

Ewart Sewart was arrested after the accident, which involved his lorry (GZZ 2285) and a minibus (BWW 8364) driven by 50-year-old Vernon Prowell, who died in the crash. Three passengers in the minibus also lost their lives: Margaret Kennedy, 72, Olga Reddy, 57, and Elvis Charles, 40.

Sewart, from Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, was also charged with driving an uninsured and uncertified motor vehicle, in violation of the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Road Traffic Acts.

During his appearance at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, the indictable and summary charges were read to him. He was remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to the indictable charge but was granted bail of twenty thousand dollars for the summary charges.

The matter was adjourned until March 27, when a report on the case will be presented. The tragic accident has sent shockwaves through the community, and the families of the victims are demanding justice for their loved ones.
