General Secretary for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has made a preliminary declaration of a sweeping win in 283 constituencies for the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE).

At a press conference which ended moments ago at Freedom House, Dr Jagdeo said the PPP/C is uncontested in 283 constituencies while adding that this serves as a significant political blow for the already weakened A Partnership For National Unity (APNU).

His revelation on this particular matter follows comments made by Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton during a media engagement this morning. At his weekly press briefing, Norton said his party submitted a list of candidates for “virtually all constituencies except for Lethem.”

Jagdeo said however that this is patently false since the numbers show that the APNU only contested in 279 of the 610 constituencies across the country. “This amounts to about 45 per cent of all the constituencies in the country. He just told the media a few minutes ago that they are contesting all, so that is a lie; he just lied to the entire country,” the General Secretary said.

When one combines the number of constituencies APNU and other political groups contested, Jagdeo said it only amounts to 327.

He said, “This means that there will be no contest in 283 of the 610 constituencies and that means we have already won these because we contested in all 610. We have already practically won 283 constituencies.”

For a national party like APNU, the General Secretary said these preliminary observations are shameful, a complete disaster. Jagdeo believes this performance is a testament to Norton’s inability to inspire and lead.
