An alleged hit-and-run on the Essequibo Coast has resulted in the arrest of a 56-year-old driver along with three charges being laid against him. Parasram Wellington, who was attached to Golden Fleece Investment, has been charged with ‘Driving Whilst Breath Alcohol Exceeds the Priscribe Limit’, ‘Failing to Stop after an Accident’ and ‘Failing to Render Assistance to an Injured Person’. The accident which occurred on the Land of Plenty Public Road on April 29, 2023, claimed the life of 46-year-old Mahendra Kissoon.

According to police reports, Kissoon and his granddaughter were walking along the road when they were struck by a motor lorry owned by Golden Fleece Investment and driven by Wellington.

Wellington allegedly fled the scene after the accident, leaving Kissoon to die on the roadway. The investigating ranks acted efficiently based on the evidence obtained, leading to the arrest of Wellington the following day.

Wellington appeared virtually at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Esther Sam, where the charges were read to him, and he pleaded not guilty. Bail was granted in the sum of $200,000 for ‘Driving Whilst Breath Alcohol Level Exceeds the Prescribe Limit’ and $20,000 each for ‘Fail to Render Assistance to Injured Person’ and ‘Fail to Stop after an Accident’. The cases have been adjourned until May 24th, 2023.

Kissoon, a resident of Lot ‘K’ Land of Plenty Public Road, Essequibo Coast was struck down while he was with his granddaughter purchasing hotdogs a short distance from their home.
