The PPP/C Government is officially occupying the Lethem Office in Region 9 which was used for decades by its APNU+AFC counterparts. This was confirmed by Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton at a press conference today. He told members of the media that the party is still doing what it can to remove the agents of the administration from the building.

Norton also shared his belief that the eviction of the party from the Lethem office is just one of several incidents of provocation, intended to fuel a “physical confrontation” between government and opposition supporters. Despite this incitement, Norton said such a situation would not be in the best interest of his supporters.

Norton in responding to queries from Guyana Standard on the matter also said that the party has taken legal and other forms of action to stop the occupation of the building until a concrete solution can be arrived at.

Norton’s comments then took a seemingly dark turn, as he sounded a warning to the administration. He said, “I spoke to one Government Minister yesterday and I told him that this government is pushing a physical confrontation and to let him know that we are not short on people to deal with them in a physical confrontation… And so I said to them, they need to back off.”

Reports from the Auditor General’s Office which are reviewed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had suggested the that the Region Nine office be vacated, due to the fact that it was illegally occupied along with other government properties across the country. This was also highlighted by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo back in March, following the dismantling of a building in the region that housed a PNCR office.
