Fabian Smith, the prime suspect in the murder of 55-year-old Andrew Harris, also known as ‘Shortman,’ has confessed to the crime, police say.

Harris was reportedly stabbed to death sometime between July 31, 2023, and August 1, 2023, at ‘Mer Meria’ Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River. The confession took place during a video interview conducted by Detectives at Bartica Police Station around 15:20 hrs yesterday.

During the interview, Smith admitted to fatally stabbing Harris following a heated argument. The investigation into the incident continues as authorities gather more evidence and information surrounding the case.

Harris, a shopkeeper, had been working alongside Smith, a 34-year-old co-worker, on a newly constructed shop owned by a 52-year-old businesswoman from Stewartville, West Coast Demerara. The two had been laboring together for the past 10 days.

The tragic incident came to light when the businesswoman received a phone call from Smith around 10:00 hrs on August 1, notifying her of Harris’ apparent death at the shop. Subsequently, the police were informed and an investigation was initiated.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement discovered Harris’ lifeless body in a slouched position on a bench. Bloodstains were visible on his jersey and the surrounding area. Detectives closely examined the body, revealing a stab wound approximately three inches wide on the victim’s upper left chest.

Following the discovery, Smith was promptly apprehended at a nearby camp and taken into custody as the prime suspect in the case.
