Detectives are probing a failed ‘robbery under arms’ committed on a 29-year-old contractor and gold miner of Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

The incident occurred around 20:27 hrs yesterday at the Classic Chinese Restaurant at Success Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

During the attack, the victim was momentarily relieved of his licensed 9MM pistol by three identifiable male suspects, one of whom was armed with a firearm.

Enquiries disclosed that the victim, on the date and time mentioned, was imbibing at the restaurant with his father and some friends when he observed the three suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, rush into the restaurant.

The armed robber pointed his gun toward the victim and demanded his valuables and cash.

During a scuffle for the victim’s firearm, one of the suspects was shot in his right leg. The suspects then ran out of the restaurant in a western direction with the victim’s firearm.

The contractor gave chase in his vehicle behind the shot suspect. The businessman observed the injured suspect heading south on foot with his firearm, and he (the victim) drove his vehicle into the suspect, causing him to receive further injuries.

The businessman retrieved his firearm with 15 rounds and reported the incident to the police.

The injured suspect, who was arrested, was subsequently identified as a 21-year-old Security Guard of ‘B’ Field, Sophia. He was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient under police guard.

Detectives combed the area and retrieved CCTV footage to be analysed.

The victim’s firearm and ammunition were lodged as further investigations are ongoing.
