The Rotary Club of Georgetown Central (RCGC) recently celebrated a major milestone, its 40th anniversary, on November 1, 2023. Founded in 1983, the club has been dedicated to serving communities in Guyana for four decades, embracing the Rotary International motto of, “Service above Self.”

In his anniversary address, RCGC President Peter Pompey reflected on the club’s journey, saying, “Today marks 40 years since the RCGC received its Charter from Rotary International. We became the second Rotary Club to be formed in Guyana, by men with a vision of amplifying Rotary International’s motto of ‘Service above Self’.” He also praised the club’s members, both past and present, for their dedication and service.

The RCGC is known for its diverse range of initiatives aimed at improving basic education and literacy, community development, mental health, girl’s empowerment, and promoting healthy lifestyles. Over the years, the club has implemented numerous projects and has also provided aid to individuals and communities in need.

Pompey also mentioned the current conflicts around the world and the vision of the Rotary International President, Gordon Mclnally, which is to “create hope in the world.” Underscoring this vision, Pompey stated, “The vision of the RI President is to restore hope, to help the world heal from destruction and conflicts and in turn to help us achieve lasting change for ourselves.”

He urged club members to uphold the ideals of Rotary and contribute to the development of Guyana through various roles and knowledge sharing. Under its banner, the RCGC has also established one Inner Wheelers Club, one Rotary Club, one Rotaract Club, and four Interact Clubs in Guyana.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the RCGC has planned a series of activities including a church service, a medical outreach, donations to Uncle Eddie’s Home, and a collaborative project with Rotary/Rotaract for the St. John’s Bosco Home boys and girls of Shaheed Girls Orphanage.
