The Ministry of Agriculture said it created a new division to focus on boosting food productivity within Hinterland communities. This was recently disclosed by subject minister, Zulfikar Mustapha.

During his end-of-year press conference, the official said, “We established a Hinterland Department (through which) where we are working very closely with Toshaos across communities and we are supporting them with planting material and a number of livestock have been distributed.”

Minster Mustapha said plans are in train to purchase excavators and other types of machinery to assist with land preparation. Thus far, he said large tractors have been distributed to Regions One and Nine to assist with their programmes.

He was also pleased to share that $62.1million was spent on completing a rainwater harvesting project in Deep South Rupununi. It is expected to benefit approximately 800 farmers spread across 20 villages.
