Energy and technology giant, Baker Hughes is set to embark on a substantial expansion of its Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD) supercenter facility which currently spans over eight acres.

In a recent move, the company issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) to identify contractors specializing in civil engineering/construction services, specifically those with local expertise. The expansion project is designed to accommodate increased office spaces, workshop bay expansion, laydown yard concrete extension, and electronics lab expansion.

Currently, Baker Hughes is a key player in providing drilling services, drill bits, and drilling and completion fluids to multiple drilling rigs. Its Completions and Wellbore Intervention product line plays a pivotal role in supporting upper completions for development wells in Guyana. Additionally, Baker Hughes’ Turbomachinery & Process Solutions (TPS) and Upstream Chemicals businesses contribute technological solutions to the second floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel in Guyana, Liza Unity, and other regional projects.

The original multimodal supercenter was constructed in conjunction with Baker Hughes’ completed warehouse and liquid mud and its significant investment in its Guyana operations which is set to last over 15 years.

The expanded supercenter is also expected to further extend Baker Hughes’ offering of subsea equipment and installation services. With expectations to employ over 100 individuals within five years, the majority of the workforce is anticipated to be Guyanese, aligning with Guyana’s Local Content Act (2021). This legislation mandates companies to submit local content plans, outlining strategies for engaging with local businesses and individuals in areas such as employment, training, and procurement of goods and services.

Thanks to the efficacy of the Local Content Act, the oil and gas sector has witnessed a significant boost in Guyanese employment, exceeding a total of 6,000 individuals.

Companies interested in providing the specified services are required to submit their EOI packages by the submission deadline on February 16, 2024, to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected] “‌”) and [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected] “‌”).
