Local business developer, Dave Narine, has submitted a comprehensive proposal to the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the establishment of a US$4 million modern quarry project along the Essequibo River in Region Two. Recognizing the surging demand for aggregate, particularly driven by the oil and gas sector and the expanding construction industry, Narine’s project seeks to help bridge the existing supply gap and cater to projected future needs.

Situated approximately 30 kilometers west of Buckhall, with convenient access to Parika and Georgetown along riverain routes, the proposed DWI quarry project boasts promising geological conditions. In the proposal it was noted that in the region, part of the Trans-Amazonian Craton, is rich in hard rock occurrences, presenting favorable prospects for extensive quarryable material.

The project entails an initial capacity to produce 300,000 metric tons of aggregate and boulders annually, with plans for further expansion. Transportation of quarry outputs via barge down the Essequibo River to Georgetown is envisaged, catering primarily to the local construction industry’s needs while supporting sea defense projects.

Beyond its economic significance, the DWI quarry project holds promise for employment generation, with an estimated 80 jobs during construction and 50 jobs during operation. With a projected economic lifespan of at least 20 years, the project aims to contribute to the country’s economic growth by reducing import reliance, meeting local market demand, and curbing consumer costs.
