The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, Kiana Wilburg has noted the need for greater empowerment of women in the oil and gas sector, which will be a heavy focus for the organization going forward.

During a recent interview on Edu-FM, Wilburg spoke passionately about the importance of gender equality, inclusivity, and the representation of women in key decision-making processes within the industry.

The CEO highlighted the imbalance within the oil and gas industry, noting its heavy male dominance. She stressed the significance of women’s voices and perspectives in shaping policy positions to ensure that legislative outcomes align with the best interests of women. “The oil and gas industry is heavily male dominated. And I think the voice of women, the perspectives that we have it add to the policy positions ensuring that the policies that do come out from the legislative branch are in our interests,” Wilburg asserted, underlining the vital role women play in influencing policy development.

Reflecting on her forthcoming role as CEO of the Energy Conference, Wilburg expressed her commitment to promoting gender diversity and inclusivity within the sector. She articulated the conference’s objective of advocating for women to have a meaningful presence at the table, not merely as token representatives but as contributors whose insights are integrated into policy documents.

“So I think it’s important to note that one of the important things the Energy Conference is trying to do is to promote the importance of women having a seat at the table,” Wilburg stated, emphasizing the long-term commitment of the Energy Conference to prioritize women’s participation and advancement in the industry.

She added, “It’s not just about having us at the table so that we just fill a position. it’s about, but how are our perspectives incorporated into policy documents. And I think that is going to be at the core of what we’re going to do, not just for 2024. But beyond.“

Wilburg’s appointment as the incoming CEO of the Energy Conference was announced earlier this month, with her official tenure set to commence in May. With her extensive background in journalism and a clear vision for fostering gender diversity and empowerment, Wilburg is poised to lead initiatives aimed at effecting positive change within the oil and gas sector.

Wilburg’s advocacy for women’s empowerment in the oil and gas industry underscores the pressing need for gender inclusivity and representation at all levels of decision-making. As she prepares to assume her new role, Wilburg’s dedication to advancing gender equality serves as a beacon of hope for women seeking to make their mark in this traditionally male-dominated field.
