Senior Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh recently presented Supplementary Appropriation Bill No 1 of 2025 to the National Assembly to increase the administration’s investments in a number of areas. Notably, the bill outlines a request for $2.9 Billion for the continuation of road works countrywide under the Ministry of Public Works.
It should be noted that in 2024, $73 billion was expended on community roads. In 2025, a further sum of $53.2 billion was budgeted to continue this programme. Since assuming office, the government has converted over 4,000 dilapidated community roads and muddy dams into durable concrete or asphalt surfaces and over 2,500 km of hinterland roads were constructed or rehabilitated.
The supplementary also requests $12 billion to support government’s aggressive housing programme. Guyana Standard previously reported that $78.5 billion was expended in 2024 in this area, while $112.6 billion has been allocated for 2025. These sums are intended to continue the development of new and existing housing areas, along with the allocation of an additional 25,000 house lots which will result in surpassing the 50,000 manifesto commitment by 15,000.
The Bill also caters for a number of other programmes, including the government’s electricity programme under the Office of the Prime Minister to the tune of $29. 5 billion. Of that amount, $28. 8 billion will support the upgrade and expansion of electricity distribution networks and $738 Million will ensure expansion to unserved areas. The bill also caters for the continuation of the $100,000 cash grant initiative.
