Dear Editor,

On May 15, 2025, the Guyana Chronicle carried a headline captioned “Jagdeo calls out APNU/AFC over ‘Political hijacking’ of Adriana Younge death.” As a concerned citizen, I am compelled to respond—not on behalf of any political party, but on behalf of justice, truth, and the many families in Guyana still waiting for both.

Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo’s attempt to accuse the opposition of politicizing the death of young Adriana Younge distracts from the core issue: the lack of transparency and accountability from the Government and the Guyana Police Force. If the PPP/C administration, led by President Irfaan Ali, were genuinely committed to justice, then the public would not need to protest or raise their voices. The fact that they must do so speaks volumes about the state of trust in our institutions.

Let us be honest—this is not just about Adriana Younge. Her tragic death is part of a painful and ongoing pattern. There are countless others, past and present, whose families continue to wait for justice. We have not forgotten Minister Satyadeow Sawh, brutally murdered during Jagdeo’s presidency, whose killers still roam free. Where was the justice then?

The Guyanese people are tired. Tired of empty rhetoric. Tired of mourning our young sons and daughters. Tired of being silenced. We are not asking for favours—we are demanding our rights: justice, equality, and respect. If justice had been delivered swiftly and transparently, there would be no opportunity for anyone to “politicize” these tragedies.

So instead of blaming others for speaking out, the PPP Government should look inward. Stop blaming the opposition. Stop ignoring grieving families. And above all, stop the cycle of violence and injustice that continues to rob our nation of its future.

The people of Guyana deserve better. We deserve to live. And we will not be silenced in our call for what is right.

Respectfully,

Pt.Ubraj Narine, JP, COA
Former Staff Sgt.(GDF), Mayor
City of Georgetown
