The divorce is practically final as several sources confirmed a complete breakdown in negotiations between the Alliance for Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). This publication understands that attempts were recently made to return to the negotiation table but it is now deemed impossible for the AFC to stick around as it is now being offered less than what was originally on the table.

Guyana Standard understands that Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton told the AFC that the APNU has already decided on it prime ministerial candidate. Meaning, AFC can no longer occupy that spot.

“The party has already decided on a candidate. We have agreed that Juretha Furnandes will be our Prime Ministerial candidate. We could not sit around and wait for AFC to come to its senses. Important decisions needed to be made while their heads were in the cloud,” the source said.

Reliable sources also told Guyana Standard that many in the party were of the opinion that longstanding PNCR member Ganesh Mahipaul would have been the pick for prime ministerial candidate.

“Many of us thought it would have been Ganesh. He has his ways, but he is an extremely hard worker. He has been overlooked because many believe Juretha is a more attractive candidate. A woman of indigenous heritage is a good look.

Another source said, “Ganesh is not pleased, let us see if he will be next to leave. I know him to be loyal but, in this season, you never know.”
