The next People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government will rollout a student transportation grant, the party’s General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has promised. During a press conference today, the official noted that the plan is already in works and stems from his party’s push to eliminate the burden on parents to fund their children’s education.

“Every child in the country, whether parents are poor or wealthy, they have opportunities for a good quality education,” he said.

This initiative, he said, will augment the existing grants, the Because We Care Cash Grant and the Uniform Allowance.

“The next thing is getting the child to school. We might not be able to cover all the costs, but we will give maybe on an annual basis, a grant to the parents to offset transportation cost when the child gets to school,” he said.

He added that the government will also expand the school feeding programme so children can get a good meal in school if they need it.

“Then, with free tuition at every level, all the way to university, then we’re going to pay for their exams. So, We can remove all the burden when a person has a child. Now they don’t have to worry whether they’re rich or poor,” the General Secretary said.
