Reyna Depeazer, a 16-year-old girl from East LaPenitence, Georgetown, who was hit by a stray bullet at about 23:25 hrs yesterday at Mango Lane, East Ruimvelt, succumbed last night at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she had been undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
Police have since arrested Travel Daniels Hammer, the 18-year-old suspect, who is an unemployed resident of Trench Road, East LaPenitence.
Investigations revealed that on the date and time mentioned, the victim and another teenager (friend) were sitting on a motorcycle, liming, on Mango Lane while another motorcycle was parked next to them. It was alleged that the suspect drove up in a white Fielder wagon motor car (Registration Number PYY 2896) and stopped. He then exited the car with a handgun in his hand, went up to the motorcyclist (next to the victim and her friend), and the two of them had a misunderstanding.
During the misunderstanding, the suspect discharged a round, which hit the victim on her neck. She fell to the ground, and the suspect immediately went into the car and drove away from the scene. The 16-year-old was picked up by police ranks and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she underwent surgery and later succumbed. She received a gunshot wound to her neck.
Today, at about 01:00hrs, the suspect was arrested on Mandela Avenue, in the said motor car. He was told of the allegation made against him, arrested and cautioned. A search was carried out on him, also the motor car and at his home, but no firearm was found. He was escorted to CID Headquarters, where he was swabbed for gun powder residue, and the motorcar was lodged. He was placed into custody as investigations continue.
