Businessman turned politician, Dr. Terrance Campbell believes that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) has no real interest in inclusionary governance. He said the PPP/C’s decision to “capture some fools” was born out of necessity. Dr. Campbell said this during a recent interview on Elections Insights with Wendell Jeffery.
Dr. Campbell noted that in 2011, the PPP/C lost control of the National Assembly by one seat. Then, in 2015, the party lost government to the APNU+AFC which then enjoyed a one seat majority. In 2020, the PPP/C reclaimed Office and control of the National Assembly, again by one seat.
Dr. Campbell said that the PPP/C then made a decision “that they are going to capture some fools but not because they want to reach out to those people in any genuine way. They are going to capture them to protect their majority.”
Dr. Campbell said further that the PPP/C realized “this one seat variable was not working any more. So, we are going to pull in some additional votes just so we can continue along the path of corruption. We are going to throw some crumbs from the master’s table.”
While this is the view articulated by Dr. Campbell, PPP/C General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said several times before that his party has a genuine interest in expanding its support base. Jagdeo said he wants to lead the PPP/C into an era where it is no longer deemed an “Indo-Guyanese party.”
