The University of Guyana (UG) has placed all its campuses under a new security protocol in the wake of a suspected terrorist attack at a Georgetown gas station that resulted in the death of a child.

The institution is urging students and staff to remain vigilant and comply with enhanced safety protocols ahead of its 2025 Convocation set for November 20-22 at the Turkeyen campus and December 6 at the Berbice campus.

The university said the alert requires heightened awareness and immediate reporting of any suspicious activity on campus. Security teams have been instructed to conduct stop-and-search operations, and members of the university community were reminded to cooperate fully with these measures.

UG has begun testing a new emergency-response app, designed by its Tactical Online Services Unit, where students and staff can submit tips and other concerns. The university is also encouraging them to report concerns to campus security through a web service it provided.

The university’s measures come as police offer a $5 million reward for a man suspected to have caused a deadly explosion at the Mobil gas station on Regent and King Streets, Georgetown. The man, who police say appears to be a Spanish-speaking foreign national, was seen placing a black bag near a cage filled with gas cylinders. The explosion injured several persons and caused the death of six-year old Soraya Bourne.
