From today, those in search of vegetarian cuisine can head down to Vegi Blitz to secure “authentic” vegetarian food.

Between 2019 and 2020, Vegi Blitz was gaining much popularity in the niche community which it was intended to serve. Then, the pandemic hit and all were encouraged to stay inside. By the time the green-light was given for restaurants to reopen, Marissa Primo, the proprietor of Vegi Blitz, already had her eyes set on other opportunities that required her leaving Guyana for a bit.

That time has now passed and Primo is eager to resume serving people who have similar dietary needs as she does.

“I am a vegetarian, I love cooking, and I like pretty food,” said Primo during an interview with Guyana Standard. She explained that Guyana has no major shortage of vegetarian eating spots. “But the difference with Vege Blitz, the difference I bring, is that I take as much pride in the presentation of my food, as I do with the taste.”

Further, Primo explained what she means by “authentic” vegetarian food. “It means food free of any contamination. There is no contact with meat at all. I do not use aji (ajinomoto) and there is not pot, pan or any cutlery that has been in contact with meat.”

When Guyana Standard conducted this interview yesterday, Primo was taking a brief time out from perfecting the finishing touches to her space at 23 Norton Street. She has been keen on recreating a suitable atmosphere for her small business to thrive. While the space, by no means, presents as fine dining, it is fresh and comfortable. The earthy aesthetic provides a calming vibe known to be appreciated by those who prefer home surroundings.

Vegi Blitz caters to the needs of vegetarians, vegans and Rastafarians, including those black sip eaters. Available will be various stews, with and without chunks, hot dogs (made with vegetarian sausage and burgers (with vegetarian patties). Smoothies and local juices will also be on sale. Primo indicated that breakfast, lunch and dinner will be available, Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM.
