Police in Regional Division 4 ‘C’ are investigating a fire of unknown origin which occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, about 05:30hrs at a business place along the East Coast Demerara which houses a betting shop operated by a 37-year-old female of Haslington, East Coast Demerara.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the operator had secured the business on Sunday, March 15, 202, at about 16:30 hours and later retired to bed.
About 05:30hrs on Monday, she was alerted by a relative that the building was on fire. Upon checking, she observed the structure engulfed in flames.
The Guyana Fire Service was contacted and responded promptly, extinguishing the blaze and preventing the building from being completly destroyed. However, the building’s interior, along with several monitors and electronic equipment, was damaged in a fire.
The value of the damaged items is yet to be ascertained.
Investigations are ongoing.
