Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Monday May 18, 2026, about 18:45hrs on the Beterverwagting Public Road, East Coast Demerara, involving motor car, HD 5540, driven by a 45-year-old male of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara and an unidentified female pedestrian of Chinese descent.
Initial enquiries revealed that the motor car was proceeding west along the northern driving lane of the southern carriageway of Beterverwagting Public Road, reportedly at a fast rate of speed, when a collision occurred with the pedestrian. The woman was reportedly crossing the roadway at the time.
As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell onto the road and sustained injuries about her body. The driver reportedly lost control of the motor car, which ran onto the concrete median and came to a halt.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits identification and a post-mortem examination.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol.
The vehicle has been lodged pending examination and the driver is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Investigations are ongoing.
