Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar has assured consumers that electricity generation from the powerships operating in the Demerara and Berbice rivers remains stable as negotiations continue for the renewal of the contract between the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and UCC JV with Karpowership.
In a statement addressing public concerns over the status of the agreement, Indar said the government is working to secure favourable terms while ensuring that power generation remains unaffected.
“There has been much commentary on the renewal of the contract between the Guyana Power and Light Inc. and UCC JV with Karpowership.
I would like to assure the public that the Government of Guyana is working in the best interests of the people of Guyana to get the best possible commercial rate for the renewal of the contract,” the minister said.
He stressed that the country is not experiencing power outages as a result of insufficient generation capacity.
“Rather, there may be power outages due to maintenance of the power grid and interruptions caused by private contractors,” Indar stated.
The minister noted that discussions between the parties are still ongoing but emphasised that electricity from the powerships continues to be supplied to the national grid without interruption.
He added that the public will be apprised at the appropriate time on the completion of the contractual negotiations between the Guyana Power and Light Inc. and UCC JV with Karpowership.
