Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand this morning visited the Herstelling/Little Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) following a fire that damaged one of the council’s buildings.

During the visit, the Minister met with firefighters who responded to the blaze, teachers attached to the nearby Providence Nursery School, NDC staff, and a security guard who courageously attempted to extinguish the fire before emergency responders arrived.

The fire also caused minor damage to the Providence Nursery School, resulting in the temporary closure of the institution while the extent of the damage is assessed and the necessary remedial works are undertaken.

Minister Manickchand commended the efforts of the Guyana Fire Service and all those who responded to the incident, particularly the security guard whose swift actions demonstrated courage and commitment in the face of danger.

Importantly, the Minister assured residents that the fire will not affect the cash grant distribution scheduled for Friday, June 30, 2026.

Rather than utilising the Providence Nursery School as originally planned, the distribution exercise will now be conducted in the undamaged section of the Herstelling/Little Diamond NDC building, ensuring that residents can receive their grants without interruption.

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is working closely with the relevant agencies to assess the damage and restore normal operations as quickly as possible while ensuring the continued delivery of services to residents.
