Amid growing public outrage over the recent MV Barima tragedy, many have called for the resignation of Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill. In response, Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips stated that such a decision should be made by President Irfaan Ali.
Phillips said that the decision regarding the minister’s position ultimately rests with President Irfaan Ali. During a press conference, Phillips stated, “Yes, we hear the noise out there, but I can only assure you as the primary assistant to the president, I can assure you that the president has ears and he is hearing. I want to also inform and remind you that the decision lies with the president,” Phillips explained.
While public sentiment leans towards a call for accountability through ministerial resignation, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of respecting the chain of command and the presidential prerogative in such matters.
