Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, today handed over eight tractors, eight rotovators and a harvester to support farmers in DeVeldt, Geatroy, Fort Nassau, Sand Hills, Kimbia, Ebini, Wiruni and Wikki, as part of efforts to ramp up the production of beans for both the local and export markets.

The handover fulfils a commitment made by Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, to farmers in the Berbice River communities.

The tractors are specifically designed to operate with the implements that will facilitate mechanised land preparation and planting of beans, including black-eyed peas and red beans. The equipment will significantly improve farmers’ capacity to cultivate larger acreages and increase productivity.

This intervention will help move farmers from subsistence-level production to large-scale commercial agriculture, creating greater opportunities for income generation and expanding Guyana’s agricultural production.

The handover reflects the Government’s sustained commitment to strengthening national food security, reducing the food-import bill, increasing local production and placing modern productive assets directly in the hands of farmers. ( Source: Ministry of Agriculture-Guyana)
