Member of Parliament Natasha Singh was arrested at approximately 1:30 am on Wednesday morning on allegations of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The firearm reportedly belongs to Member of Parliament Dawn Hastings and is licensed in Hastings’ name. Both parliamentarians had been preparing to travel when police officers and Coast Guard personnel arrived at a docked vessel in Friendship.
According to the WIN, Hastings was off the vessel when the officers arrived and had placed her personal belongings inside Singh’s vehicle. Hastings later boarded the vessel to determine why police and Coast Guards were seeking to conduct a search.
While Hastings was aboard, the Coast Guard cut the rope securing the vessel to the dock. This prevented Hastings from returning to the vehicle where she had left her belongings and also prevented Singh from boarding the vessel.
Singh then reportedly left the compound in her vehicle intending to meet her colleagues at the location to which the Coast Guard was taking them. However, police allegedly stopped her at the gate of the Opposition Leader’s compound, preventing her from continuing her journey.
Police searched Singh’s vehicle, where the licensed firearm was reportedly found. Singh was subsequently arrested on allegations of unlawful possession of the firearm and ammunition, despite claims that it was lawfully licensed to Hastings.
Singh remains in custody at the Farm Police Station.
