Residents and farmers of Buses Lust and surrounding communities along the East Bank Berbice are benefiting from improved drainage following the completion of a new drainage sluice and outfall in the community.
The approximately $60 million project was undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), following a commitment made by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha during an engagement with residents and farmers in the area.
The new structure is expected to improve the discharge of excess water, strengthen drainage capacity and reduce the risk of flooding affecting homes and agricultural lands.
The project forms part of the Government’s wider programme to improve drainage and irrigation infrastructure along the East Bank Berbice, where investments have also been made to rehabilitate canals and open additional lands for agricultural production.
According to the Ministry, previous interventions along the East Bank have improved drainage and irrigation services to approximately 10,000 acres of agricultural land.
The completion of the Buses Lust sluice is expected to provide greater drainage security for residents and farmers while supporting continued agricultural production along the East Bank Berbice corridor. (Extracted and modified from the Ministry of Agriculture-Guyana’s Facebook Page)
