Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha has underscored the importance of continued investment, innovation and farmer empowerment in advancing Guyana’s agricultural transformation and strengthening national and regional food security.
Mustapha made the remarks at the opening of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Farmers’ Conference, currently underway at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), where farmers, agricultural stakeholders, policymakers and industry experts have gathered to discuss the future of the sector.
The conference is focused on identifying new opportunities, strengthening partnerships and developing strategies to build a more modern, competitive, resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.
A major feature of the event is a series of interactive breakout sessions examining key areas of agricultural development, including modernising livestock production, agro-processing and market access, strengthening food systems, and advancing farmer competitiveness.
The sessions are expected to provide a platform for farmers and other stakeholders to share experiences, discuss challenges and explore practical solutions to improve productivity, expand market opportunities and strengthen the long-term sustainability of agriculture.
The conference also highlights the importance of equipping farmers with the tools, knowledge and opportunities needed to increase production, improve competitiveness and contribute to Guyana’s growing agricultural economy.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture will host a Farmers’ Market at the ACCC from 3:30 p.m. today, giving consumers the opportunity to purchase fresh, locally produced agricultural commodities and value-added products directly from farmers and agro-processors at affordable prices.
