The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), in collaboration with the Maritime Administration
Department (MARAD), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Guyana Energy
Agency (GEA), the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Defence Force Coast
Guard, has activated a coordinated response following the identification of a potential oil
spill risk involving a barge located at a private wharf on the East Bank of Demerara.
The vessel, which is reported to be carrying approximately 8,000 barrels of waste oil,
was observed to be listing significantly while berthed at the facility. As a precautionary
measure, relevant authorities immediately mobilised to assess the situation and
implement appropriate risk mitigation measures.
Current efforts are focused on supporting the safe stabilisation of the vessel and reducing
the likelihood of any environmental impact. The CDC assures the public that all necessary
precautions are being taken to ensure the protection of public safety, nearby
communities, and the surrounding environment.
At this time, no oil spill has been confirmed. However, contingency measures, including
containment and response resources, have been positioned to facilitate a swift and
effective response should the need arise.
The situation remains stable currently and is under continuous monitoring by the
relevant authorities.
The Commission remains committed to working with its partners to safeguard lives,
protect the environment, and ensure that all appropriate measures are taken in the
interest of national safety, the public and the environment.
