Guyana has recorded improvements in English, Science and Social Studies at this yearโs National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA). Performance in Mathematics, however, has witnessed a decline. This was according to the Chief Education Officer (CEO), Marcel Hutson today.
Mathematics fell from 42% in 2019 to 39.4%. It was further reported that 61.2% of the candidates secured 50% or more in English, as against 51.7% in 2019. In the area of Social Studies, 53% of the candidates secured 50% and more in 2020, as opposed to 39% in 2019.
A total of 14,032 candidates took the exams which were held between July 1 and 2. The examination in each subject area entailed two papers: Paper I consisted of 40 multiple choice questions, while Paper II comprised of essay-type, or open-ended questions.
The areas tested for each subject are as follows:
Mathematics โ Knowledge, Algorithmic Thinking and Reasoning
Science โ Knowledge, Comprehension and Application
Social Studies โ Knowledge, Conceptual Understanding and Use of Knowledge
English โ Reading, Comprehension and Vocabulary, Structure and Mechanics, Content Vocabulary, Language and Organisation
The highest possible standardized score attainable for each subject are as follows:
Mathematics โ 136 marks
English โ 129 marks
Social Studies โ 128 marks
Science โ 135 marks
The highest possible total score was 528.
