A 33-year-old resident of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara is the country’s latest road fatality. He was killed yesterday around 14:10hrs, police say.

Guyana Standard understands that the cyclist, Adiraj Persaud was struck down by a minibus driven by a 43-year-old man (no name provided) from East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Enquiries disclosed that the minibus was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the Herstelling Public Road, when it collided with the 33-year-old, who was riding from east to west across the said road. The minibus subsequently rammed into a parked lorry.

As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist was flung onto the road’s surface where he received injuries and was subsequently picked up in an unconscious condition by public spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was seen and examined by a doctor, and subsequently admitted. He suffered from a fractured skull and died while receiving treatment.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the minibus and no trace of alcohol was found.

Investigations are ongoing.
