Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, says his party has moved on from the possibility of forming a coalition with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) for the upcoming General and Regional Elections (GRE) scheduled for September 1, 2025.

When asked on Thursday whether the AFC was still open to negotiations with APNU, Hughes responded, “The prospects are marginal,” before adding, “It’s too late for that now.”

Though the AFC and APNU successfully contested the 2015 elections together, both sides were unable to reach a consensus for this year’s poll.

Hughes’ remarks come just one day after three members, Sherod Duncan, Juretha Fernandes, and Deonarine “Ricky” Ramsaroop, submitted their names to APNU’s list of candidates for the elections, without informing the AFC. Fernandes is now the APNU’s Prime Ministerial Candidate.

Aubrey Norton, the APNU Chairman, this morning suggested that the AFC in retaliation, is going after its members – 10 to be exact.

But Hughes denied these claims.

“No. The Alliance For Change, in any negotiations that it enters into, certainly under my watch, one of the most critical elements of that is trust. There’s no way the Alliance For Change would be engaged in any discussions with anyone, not just APNU, PNC, or anybody, and during the course of our endeavors, take any action that would in any way impair the trust between the parties. That’s not our way of operating,” the AFC Leader declared.
