Leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Azruddin Mohamed was on Monday elected Leader of the Opposition following a closed-door vote by the opposition at the Parliament Building in Georgetown, nearly three months after the National Assembly was fully constituted.
Speaking with the media shortly after the meeting, Mohamed confirmed his election and described the process as seamless. “In less than five minutes, I was elected Leader of the Opposition, ready to serve the people of this country,” he said.
Terrence Campbell, from A Partnership for National Unity, told reporters that only one nomination was made for the post, that of Mohamed, who was subsequently elected unopposed.
Leader of the Forward Guyana Movement, Amanda Walton-Desir, said the vote took about five minutes.
In the lead-up to today, the government criticized the prospect of Mohamed becoming Opposition Leader, warning that a “fugitive offender” holding the post would bring disgrace to Guyana and damage the country’s reputation internationally.
Mohamed and his father, Nazar, continue to fight extradition to the U.S. in court on charges of corruption and fraud.
