Preliminary investigations into the multi-vehicle accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge on Wednesday indicate that the incident was caused by a mechanical failure.
According to the Ministry of Public Works, the accident involved five vehicles, including a cement truck and a motorcycle, and occurred while the truck was ascending the high span of the bridge when it reportedly experienced mechanical problems.
First responders confirmed that one person died as a result of the collision, one individual remains in serious condition, and two others sustained minor injuries. The injured are receiving medical treatment.
Emergency services, including the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Fire Service, and medical personnel, were immediately dispatched to the scene following the accident. Specialized teams continue to carry out a thorough wash-down of the bridge surface to remove debris and spilled materials and to ensure the bridge is safe before full traffic flow is restored.
The Ministry of Public Works has dismissed claims circulating publicly that the truck involved was overweight. Officials stated that records show the vehicle was weighed prior to crossing and met the required axle load limits. The ministry emphasized that the incident has been attributed solely to mechanical failure.
Commuters were advised that some delays may persist as recovery and assessment operations continue.
The Ministry of Public Works has extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and expressed best wishes for the full recovery of those injured.
