While many people spent the last weekend resting or enjoying time with their families, a dedicated team of surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and support staff at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) spent their Saturday in the operating theatre, helping patients take a significant step toward a pain-free and more active life.

On Saturday, May 30, the Orthopaedic Department, led by the lead surgeon, Dr. Kaleshwar Ramcharran, successfully completed six (6) joint replacement surgeries, including four (4) knee replacements and two hip replacements, as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce the backlog of patients awaiting these life-changing procedures.

The surgeries were completed during a special weekend initiative conducted outside of the department’s regular operating schedule. By Sunday, all six patients had been discharged and were recovering well, marking another successful milestone for the team.

For the patients who underwent surgery, the procedures represent far more than a medical intervention. Joint replacement surgery can restore mobility, reduce chronic pain, increase independence, and significantly improve overall quality of life for individuals who have often spent years living with debilitating joint conditions.

What makes this initiative particularly remarkable is the commitment of the healthcare professionals involved. The surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and support staff voluntarily gave up their personal time to ensure that more patients could access the care they need.

At GPHC, joint replacement surgeries are typically limited to a small number of cases each week due to the high demand for operating theatre space among multiple surgical specialties. To address the growing waiting list, the Orthopaedic Department has traditionally conducted quarterly intensive surgery initiatives aimed at treating additional patients.

However, recognizing the continued demand for these procedures, the department is now expanding its efforts. Going forward, the team will conduct one dedicated joint replacement surgery weekend every month, in addition to its routine weekly surgeries and quarterly backlog-reduction initiatives.

This expanded programme represents a significant commitment from the department, requiring healthcare workers to continue providing care beyond their regular working hours. It is a reflection of the team’s shared determination to improve access to orthopaedic services and reduce waiting times for patients in need.

The initiative also serves as a valuable training opportunity for residents and junior doctors, helping to strengthen local expertise in advanced orthopaedic procedures while building the future of specialized surgical care in Guyana.

With joint replacement procedures costing approximately GYD $2.5 million in the private sector, initiatives such as these play a critical role in ensuring that quality orthopaedic care remains accessible to all Guyanese, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Behind every successful surgery is a team of dedicated healthcare professionals who continue to place patient care at the center of everything they do. Their willingness to sacrifice personal time is helping to transform lives, restore mobility, and provide hope to patients waiting for a second chance at an active and independent life.
