Police in Regional Division #4 ‘C’, along with the Office of Professional Responsibility, are investigating an alleged offence of Discharging a Loaded Firearm with Intent which occurred on Friday September 4, 2026, about 15:15hrs along the Buxton Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.
The incident involves a 48-year-old man of Buxton and a 46-year-old Police Inspector attached to the Tactical Services Unit.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 48-year-old man was driving a minibus along the Buxton Railway Embankment when an encounter occurred between him and the Police Inspector, who was driving a motor car.
An argument subsequently ensued between the two men, during which circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation. During the incident, the Police Inspector reportedly discharged several rounds from his service firearm and the 48-year-old man sustained suspected gunshot injuries.
The injured man was subsequently taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and admitted as a patient with suspected gunshot injuries to his chest and left leg. His condition is listed as serious but stable.
The Police Inspector subsequently reported the matter to the Police and handed over his service firearm, a 9mm Glock 19 pistol, along with 13 live rounds of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were lodged pending examination.
A third motor vehicle which was in the vicinity at the time was also reportedly struck during the incident. That vehicle, along with the vehicles driven by the two men, was examined as part of the investigation.
The Police Inspector is presently under close arrest assisting with the investigation.
CCTV cameras were identified in the area and efforts are being made to obtain the relevant footage.
Investigations are ongoing.
