Police in Regional Division 2 are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Donette Albert, a 29-year-old housewife, and her three-year-old son, Keron Latchman, both of David James Scheme, Essequibo Coast, following a fire at their residence.
The incident occurred on Monday October 19, 2026, at about 07:20hrs, at their residence, a single-storey wooden building which was destroyed by the fire.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Albert and her 31-year-old common-law partner, a welder, were reportedly involved in an argument earlier that morning.
According to information received, the 31-year-old male subsequently went downstairs and, shortly thereafter, reportedly observed the house engulfed in flames. He claimed that he attempted to re-enter the building to rescue Albert and their son but was unable to do so because of the intensity of the fire.
The Guyana Fire Service responded and extinguished the blaze. The charred remains of Albert and her son were subsequently discovered inside the building.
The bodies were escorted to Charity Hospital, where they were examined by a doctor who certified them dead. They were subsequently taken to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
The 31-year-old male was arrested and is presently in Police custody, assisting with the investigation.
